Aim for a 'hot' compost heap

'Hot' composting is where you have plenty of material all at once to build a good heap from layers of 'greens' and 'browns' which will break down rapidly and reach high internal temperatures, killing off weeds and pathogens;'cold' composting is where you build the heap more slowly from weekly weeds and clippings and the heat never really builds up. Autumn is a great time for 'hot composting because there is so much plant material to clear up over the next month or so.
