Leaf fall is starting early

Some trees are reacting to the drought by shedding their leaves early - the Katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum), whose fallen leaves smell of burnt sugar if you crush them, is already surrounded with a carpet of crisp leaves with a faint aroma of toffee when you walk on them.
