Robinia pseudoacacia

The Black Locust or False Acacia is generally a street tree or a parkland tree rather than one for a domestic garden; it can grow 12-30metres, though the canopy is quite open.  The pinnate leaves are an attractive blueish-green, and its fragrant white flowers are attractive laburnum-like racemes, but rather sparse on most trees. It grows rapidly and is sometimes used as a rootstock for grafting Robinia hispida  - if a stem of your R. hispida isn't covered in bristles and it throw up white flowers, beware of suckers from the rootstock!
