Prune leggy mahonias

The best time to prune a gaunt, leggy mahonia is after flowering - as it puts on its annual growth spurt. Look for a small side shoot low down on the scraggiest stems and cut back cleanly just above this. If it's a single, very bare stem, there's a risk it will give up: but it you leave it it will look awful anyway.
