Where normal plants have leaves which lose water in hot dry conditions, cacti like this Echinocactus grusonii often reduce the leaves to stiff spines, conserving the water held in the barrel-like stem at the same time as deterring any grazing animals from chewing on the juicy stem. Spiny cacti can be good houseplants as long as you position them carefully!
