The Bird of Paradise plant cannot tolerate frost, it's a South African native, but does well in full sun to semi-shade in a conservatory or glasshouse; plants can get very large in time, but are slow-growing and will not bloom until three to five years old. Young plants in garden centres are now sold with a realistic plastic flower spike to 'indicate' future flowers. This is a sore point - I didn't look closely when I bought it in for an ident, and my colleagues won't let me forget that I didn't notice the flower was plastic!
