Give your winter bedding a good start

If you are planting up containers and baskets for the winter, or even a bedding display for spring, your bedding plants will settle in faster if they can concentrate their energy on root growth - so once you know for certain what colour your violas or pansies will be from the first few flowers, it's worth pinching out open flowers (and certainly any seedheads) as you plant them up, to save the plant's energy.
