Identification clues - leaf arrangement
16th October 2021
Sometimes when plants look very similar, the arrangement of leaves on stems can help to identify them; Taxodium distichum and Metasequoia glyptostroboides have very similar leaves but different arrangements - opposite or alternate. Similarly all Acers have leaves in opposite pairs, Liquidambar styraciflua closely resembles Acers and produces similar autumn colour, but the leaves are alternate not opposite.
