Linnaea chinensis

Linnaea chinensis

This species is slightly later into flower than Linnaea (formerly Abelia) x grandiflora: it is a compact shrub with deciduous oval green leaves and dense clusters of fragrant white flowers in late summer and autumn. It needs a slightly more sheltered position than the more common shrub. Interestingly, the re-classification as Linnaea was proposed in the late 19th century but has only recently been adopted with DNA evidence.
