Look for Humming-bird Hawkmoth caterpillars

The Humming-bird Hawkmoth generally migrates here in summer, but it is believed to overwinter in some areas.  The caterpillars feed on various species of bedstraw, Galium, and the female adult moths lay their eggs on the buds or flowers of these plants.  The caterpillar is generally a bright green, with 'horns' to deter predators, and is most visible in August before it spins a cocoon in leaf litter in a sheltered spot on the ground.
