The later penstemons are some of the most useful border perennials - they flower for up to six months of the year, slugs and other pests don't seem to like them, and they tolerate most soils. Cultivars like 'King George' and the popular 'Garnet' ('Andeken an Friedrich Hahn') are reliable and easy to propagate.
