recycle potting compost where you can

In most cases potting compost that's been used to grow seeds or young plants isn't suitable to re-use  - you can add it to borders as a soil improver, but you don't grow anything IN that compost.  However when you grow potatoes in bags you use a great deal of potting compost which is essentially supporting the plant and isn't full of roots  - and if you have a lot of potato bags (perhaps from 16 students) that's a lot to spread around borders.  This year as an experiment a special planter was ready for the barrowloads of compost.
