If you don't like pots of compost in the house, air plants are epiphytes - in the wild they live attached to trees, shrubs and even rocks. Their roots are for anchorage, not absorbing water or nutrients.  They are generally thought-of as  low-maintenance houseplants, but they need bright indirect light, and to be misted regularly (which cause more problems to your decor than watering potted plants).
