Plants don't read the instructions

The Algerian Iris, Iris unguicularis, is supposed to need full sun and well drained soil, ideally at the base of of a warm wall in the UK. Perversely plants can choose to survive and flower in conditions which the RHS and other authorities wouldn't recommend, like a heavy clay soil under an evergreen shrub in an East-facing front garden.
