IMPORTANT NOTE: the RHS suite of level 2 and 3 qualifications has changed and since September 2022 all our centres have been delivering the new format Level 2 qualifications. In September 2023 our Ryton Centre became one of the first to offer the new Level 3 Practical Certificate.
For Level 2 there is a new Practical Certificate, which with a new single theory Certificate makes up a new RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.
The new Practical Certificate covers amenity procedures ( maintaining hard landscaping, using a hedgetrimmer and mower) as well as propagation, plant identification, pruning, planting etc. There will be two practical examinations at the centre with an RHS examiner and a centre assessor, and a 75 minute online test of underpinning knowledge. The Practical can be awarded at Pass, Merit and Distinction. The new syllabus means that the new Level 2 Practical will require a commitment to at least 3 hours a week of self-study using course materials alongside the practical work undertaken in class.
For Level 3 the new Practical Certificate combines with a new single theory Certificate to make up an RHS Advanced Certificate, and with a new Award in Horticultural Investigation will make up a Level 3 Diploma.
The assessment format will include a practical assessment with 'professional discussion' as well as an online examination.
The RHS has published 'transition arrangements' for those wishing to complete the 'old' level 2 and 3 Diplomas which can be downloaded here.
