IMPORTANT NOTE:  the RHS suite of level 2 and 3 qualifications is changing and from September 2022 centres will be delivering the new format Level 2 qualifications. However the RHS have delayed the introduction of new Level 3 qualifications for a further year, so we will be offering the 'current' Level 3 Practical at our centres in 2022-23, and the theory distance learning courses remain available to join for a further year up to March 2023; however the final end for examinations is still February 2024.

For Level 2 there will be a new Practical Certificate, which with a new single theory Certificate will make up a new  RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.

The Practical Certificate will no longer have optional units so all centres will deliver the same syllabus; new content will cover amenity procedures ( maintaining hard landscaping, using a hedgetrimmer and mower) as well as propagation,  plant identification, pruning, planting etc.  There will be an end-unit practical examination at the centre with an RHS examiner, and a 75 minute online test of underpinning knowledge. The Practical can be awarded at Pass, Merit and Distinction.  The current draft syllabus means that the new  Level 2 Practical will  require a commitment to at least 3 hours a week of self-study using course materials  alongside the practical work undertaken in class.

For Level 3 in 2023 there will be a new Practical Certificate, which with a new single theory Certificate will make up an RHS Advanced Certificate, and with a new Award in Horticultural Investigation will make up a Level 3 Diploma. Assessment format for the Level 3 practical Certificate will follow the Level 2 structure.

Those students who have completed one part of the current level 2 Diploma  will be able to complete it using the new Certificate in Horticultural Principles, the new Certificate in Horticultural Practice, or the existing theory Certificate in Garden Planning  which can still be offered by Centres until March 2023.

The Level 2 theory and practical syllabus has now been approved by Ofqual  and we are planning our provision. We hope to open enrolment for centre-based courses in March 2022, but for theory distance learning we will not be able to offer the new Certificate until September 2022.
