Brooms can become leggy as they get older, and to prevent this you should trim back the flowered stems by half - but never cut into the older wood. 'Boskoop Ruby' has striking ruby-coloured flowers which are very attractive to bees in late spring and early summer. If a broom does start to look really straggly and messy, remember these are a short-lived shrubs and consider replacing it.
