Hyacinthus orientalis

The common hyacinth was introduced to Europe from the Middle East in the Sixteenth Century; over the centuries of cultivation, the very fragrant flowers have been bred in many different colours. Hyacinths need winter cold to flower, making them good subjects for forcing as well as spring bedding.
