Prune apples trees - 2

The RHS now suggests that you could prune young growth less (only cut back shoots where they are crossing or badly placed), taking out larger branches in winter to keep an open shape. There are many different pruning methods which give you a productive tree - commercial orchards use a flail to break back new growth!
