While you have your perennials out of the ground, discard the oldest woody material and keep only the younger growth from the outside of the clump. Take the opportunity to dig out persistent weeds and invasive plants before improving the soil and re-planting the divisions. Here, this Cephelaria is being replanted well back in the border because it will soon make a large spreading plant.
