Sooty mould is a fungal growth which forms on the surface of leaves where aphids, scale insects and other sap-suckers have been feeding . It doesn't kill the plant directly, but weakens it. On evergreens like camellias, you can sponge it off the leaves but if you don't control insect pests, it will return.
