If you want an alternative to pellets, barriers of copper tape, copper mesh and copper wires have all been shown to deter snails from attacking plants they surround. There is also a form of landscape fabric used by growers which contains copper strands and reduces snail damage in pots standing on this fabric - this is now available as ' Shocka mats' to protect vulnerable plants.
