Clematis armandii

Clematis armandii

C. armandii prefers a sheltered location such as a west or south facing wall, where it can survive even occasional snowfalls when in flower.  The very large leaves are tough, glossy and evergreen, and clusters of scented white flowers open from the pinkish buds. It can be a rampant climber; you can prune back the new growth after flowering to keep it in check, but hard pruning to regenerate it isn't always successful - you may get away with cutting it right back if it is out of control, but it could also kill the plant.
