Red valerian is another prolific self-seeder, but against a housewall or in a cottage garden it is often welcome. The plant is actually a short-lived perennial, growing woody after a season or so, and the semi-evergreen foliage of its seedlings looks a little like willowherb. It thrives in chalky soils.
