This is practical garden design course; through a series of lectures and practical workshops it aims to provide you with the necessary underpinning knowledge and the practical skills you need to be able to design a garden competently.
There is an optional design pack which you can buy to accompany this course: it gives you all the necessary equipment and materials to produce different types of garden design drawings to a high standard. The contents include: A3 drawing board (and bag), set squares, compass, French curves, scale ruler, circle template, pack of drawing pens, colour pencils etc.

What will I study?
The course covers the history of garden design, fundamental design principles, research on materials and styles and the creative process of producing designs; on the practical side, it also covers linear and topographic surveying and site appraisal and setting out.
During the course you will produce a site plan from the information you have gathered, a master plan, planting plan, construction drawings and specifications and finally a maintenance schedule.

There are a series of 13 sessions over an academic year , involving a mixture of lectures, workshops and practical work.
This course runs from 09.30 to 15.30, always on Mondays.
Course dates are : 21st September; 5th October; 2nd, 30th November; 7th December 2020; 11th January; 1st, 8th March; 26th April; 10th May; 7th, 14th June 2021.
There will be some homework for completion between sessions which is an integral part of the course and therefore must be completed.
What qualification will I get?
On completion of the programme you will be given a course completion certificate from the Academy of Practical Horticulture.

The design pack contains all the necessary equipment and materials to produce different types of garden design drawings to a high standard. The contents include: A3 drawing board (and bag), set squares, compass, French curves, scale ruler, circle template, pack of drawing pens, colour pencils and supplies of tracing and drawing paper. The retail value of the design pack is in excess of £150.
(Without design pack) £595.00 plus V.A.T. at £119.00 for the complete course, total payable £714.00. Payment by instalments for this option is available, with an overall administration fee of £13 (total £727).
The course will take place at the Ryton Centre.

What else do I need to know?
Because of the mixture of practical work with classroom sessions, you need to wear comfortable casual clothing for indoor work and something suitable for practical activities outdoors: for inclement weather some waterproofs would be ideal! Safety footwear is mandatory for all practical activities.
What can I do after completing this course?
The next logical step would be one of the Royal Horticultural Society Courses at one of our centres, the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Garden Planning Establishment and Maintenance would be an obvious choice, if you wish to gain a formal qualification.
