Buddleja alternifolia

Buddleja alternifolia

This is the fountain buddleja, with arching branches of narrow grey-green leaves and honey scented lilac flowers on the previous year's shoots. It can be trained very effectively into a small weeping tree, but needs careful pruning after flowering to remove older twiggy growth. Experiments at Ryton have shown that it will regenerate from hard pruning into old wood, but it does take time to recover.
