Stratiotes aloides

Water soldier is one of the more unusual plants to find in an ornamental pond - native to the Fens and rare in the wild, it multiplies rapidly in garden ponds. It stays submerged through winter, and in summer rises to the surface like a bristly pineapple top, producing occasionally a solitary white flower.
