Iris foetidissima
Another iris flowering from June is the the Gladwyn or Beefsteak iris - or sometimes the Stinking iris, which is hardly fair! The leaves have a 'meaty' smell which gives it the 'beefsteak' name. It is useful in the driest of shade conditions, under conifers and in hedge bases. Unfortunately the broad evergreen leaves are more noticeable than the flowers, which are 'subtle' shades of pale blue and beige, delicately veined.
