Primula veris

Cowslips were a wildflower of open meadows - now they flourish on road verges and alongside motorways. The flower stem may be 20 cm, but is often much shorter, carrying clusters of delicately scented yellow flowers which were once common enough to used to make wine (John Evelyn's recipe, from the seventeenth century) .
