Berberis darwinii
The botanical name commemorates Charles Darwin, but the common name is Chilean barberry. It is well able to protect itself - the small, glossy evergreen leaves have spiny margins and cluster on the stem in groups of two to five - with a three-pronged spine under each cluster. Rich golden-orange flowers are followed by purple-black berries.
