Get on with apple pruning, while the ground is either too cold or too wet for other work. On spur- bearers (most apples) traditionally you should shorten the new growth to two buds on lateral shoots to induce fruit buds to form; 'leaders' which you want for extension growth to shape the tree can be pruned by one third.
