Carpinus betulus

The hornbeam is a native tree, often grown for hedging because in its juvenile state it holds on to its dead leaves over winter. It makes an excellent pleached or silt hedge. The saw-edged leaves are a soft brown, with a dull matt surface. Hornbeam hedges will tolerate wet, heavy soils and frost pockets.
