Helleborus niger

The dark leathery leaves of the Christmas rose are often cut away from garden centre plants to reveal the flower buds ready to unfurl. The large, flat white flowers start to appear appear in midwinter, facing upwards or outwards on dark stems. This mild winter means that wghere they were used for winter bedding, many of them have finished flowering already, or developed botrytis and rotted off.
