Acanthus spinosus

Spiny Bears Breeches is another impressive architectural perennial with large, deeply lobed, dark glossy green leaves - but these look much more jagged although they are as soft as the leaves of A. mollis. The spines are actually on the purplish bracts which surround the white flowers in late spring and summer. If the dry flowerheads are brought into a warm classroom , the seedheads explode and expel the seeds unexpectedly!
