Protect perennial crowns

Now that it is clear that winter has begun, some perennials like Gunnera will benefit from a protective layer of mulch; robust evergreen perennials like the hellebores in the foreground will shrug off snow, and the flowerheads on the hydrangea will be some protection for the buds on the stems beneath them, but the Rheum palmatum on the right needs some extra protection for its crown so that next year's growth tips  are not damaged over the winter.
