Leaves can help hedgehogs

If you want to encourage a hedgehog to spend the winter in your garden, leaf litter makes a useful winter blanket for hibernation. When you clear fallen leaves from on top of your perennials, leave some small heaps in quiet corners under shrubs, where a hedgehog may turn them into a nest site for the winter. Don't be despondent if no-one takes up residence immediately -  hedgehogs are generally restless and make more than one nest while they are getting comfortable for hibernation.
