Use a leaf rake

Using a spring-tined rake or springbok rake to collect leaves may not be efficient if you have a public park to maintain, but in an average garden it's quiet, good exercise and does an an effective job fairly quickly. Of course, raking up leaves in any way will disturb the insects which may have decided they are a habitat...but leaving them to lie may also encourage diseases in the plants they cover.
