This small deciduous shrub is inconspicuous for much of the year, twiggy and low growing to about 60 cm; but the leaves turn a rich red in autumn, at the same time that the intense blue flowers appear. It is named after Ellen Willmott, one of the first holders of the Victoria Medal of Honour from the RHS and a notable plant enthusiast with strongly held opinions.
