Identification clues - leaf scars

Flowers and leaves may fall in autumn, but there are other ways to identify plants: the scars left by falling leaves are often distinctive and can help with winter  identifications.  On this Catalpa, the leaf scars are very prominent, with the pattern of the veins inside the leaf stalk showing clearly. Another plant which has similar striking horse-shoe scars is the horsechestnut.
