Globe thistle is a tough herbaceous perennial, tall and drought-tolerant with thistle-like dark green leaves and many round heads of grey-blue flowers which are very attractive to bees. There are cultivars with deep blue or steel grey flowers, but the basic blue species seeds itself freely as soon as the thistle heads start to dry and disintegrate.
