Tackle field bindweed in borders

Now is a good time to deal with field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) if it has gained a hold in your borders -  cutting back some faded flowers and tidying old foliage, you will see if it's scrambling and smothering plants. You could try to dig it out (roots are brittle and deep) but if you want to use a paint-on formula of a translocated weedkiller this is a good time to apply it: as the plant starts to withdraw its resources down into the roots for winter survival, it will take the weedkiller down to where it is most useful in killing roots.
