watch out for rose sawfly

Defoliation of roses - leaves stripped to their midrib - is usually caused by larvae of the large rose sawfly; eggs are laid in young rose stems, then green caterpillars with black spots and yellow blotches hatch out in summer to munch through leaf tissues.
