The California tree poppy is a tall, rather straggling suckering perennial or subshrub with glaucous blue-grey leaves.  In a cold winter its stems die right back and it can look messy, but in the summer the large white poppy-like flowers, with  petals are like crumpled tissue paper around a huge central boss of yellow stamens, make you realise it's really worth growing.
