Convolvulus sabatius

'Blue rock bindweed' doesn't do this lovely perennial justice; it forms trailing mats of soft blue flowers which open wide with the sun. You can treat it as a tender perennial in tubs or baskets, and although it doesn't overwinter well on heavy clay  it will survive in gritty well-drained soil. Sometimes it just decides where it wants to grow:  out of 15 plants trailing over the edge of a raised border, only one overwintered, but this one now comes back every year, growing from between the two planks of the wooden edge.
