Centranthus ruber

Centranthus ruber

Red valerian is the common name for this short-lived perennial,  though the dense clusters of slightly fragrant flowers can be red, pink or white.  It has grey-green leaves and flowers from late spring to autumn, growing anywhere and seeding itself freely into any tiny patch of dust  - around buildings, in paving or into cracks in walls.
