Valeriana officinalis

Valeriana officinalis

This is not to be confused with Centranthus ruber, commonly called Valerian. This is true valerian, source of soporific herbal teas made from its powdered root; it is a fast-growing and very tall upright herbaceous perennial, generally treated as an annual because it seeds itself so freely. it has large pinnate leaves and in summer large clusters of small pink or white flowers which are very heavily and sweetly scented.
