Purple or creeping bugloss or purple gromwell is part of the borage family, with characteristic clear blue-purple flowers in spring and early summer. The perennial spreads by creeping runners, thriving in semi-shade or sun and tolerating chalk - making it a good substitute where Lithodora diffusa can't be grown.
