Fagus sylvatica

Fagus sylvatica

Beech is always one of the latest trees into leaf;  even after hornbeam hedges green up in spring, beech still stays brown and dead. Finally (this year in May) the old leaves fall and the new young leaves emerge, unfurling from the long pointed buds to  give the hedge a spectacular fresh green softness which is very susceptible to both high and low temperature damage.
