Slug and snail control is very necessary just now - hostas are just beginning to unfurl their leaves and new shoots of plants like delphinium as very susceptible to these pests. You could use ferric phosphate pellets (sparingly); these are very attractive to molluscs but not to pets - and pellets not ingested break down to iron and phosphate in the soil.
