Create a 'hot bed'

Another use for an unexpected barrow or even trailer of fresh manure is to create a hot bed  - which is particularly useful at this time of year if you don't have a heated propagator or you'd like to start plants off early on an allotment where you don't have a power source. Fill a frame with well-packed manure , cover it with a sheet of plastic for a lid and you can take advantage of the heat it gives off to germinate seeds or grow early vegetables.  It's a very old technique and there is an excellent short book on the subject by a man who has made it a life study.
