Euphorbia characias is prone to fasciation

Many of the spurges show fasciation, and in Euphorbia characias ssp. wulfenii individual plants can show it repeatedly over their short lifetime. Instead of producing grey-green leaves all around the stems as usual, the fused stems flatten and the top splays out into a strange wavy comb, bending like a cobra hood.
